A Cardinal Builds a Kingdom…

There are a male and female cardinal building a nest in a shrub-bush underneath the kitchen window. We are a little surprised that they have decided to build so close to our back entranceway, but experience has taught us that one can never be certain where birds are going to determine (and be determined) to build their nest homes. The female seems to be doing much of the nest-building and preening, and the bright red male cardinal seems to be keeping a dutifully vigilant guard on the nearby deck railing (a little like the the character in the nine of wands, I suppose…)—a lookout for any trouble while his female companion is busy at work.
